How to Create a Button Symbol in Flash CS3

Adobe Flash CS3 lets you turn objects and drawings you create into symbols, which helps to reduce the amount of memory that Flash uses. Symbols come in three varieties: graphics, buttons and movie clips. Button symbols allow you to add interactivity to your Flash application or website. Flash CS3 makes designing and creating distinctive, personalized buttons simple though its Object Conversion dialog.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an object in the main Flash workspace using the illustration tools from the main toolbar.

    • 2

Click on the "Selection Tool" at the top of the main toolbar. Double-click on your object. Your object is selected when a dotted grid appears over the selection.

    • 3

Select "Modify" from the main menu and choose "Convert to Symbol" from the list of options to open the Object Conversion dialog.

    • 4

Give your symbol a name and choose "Button" from the "Type" list. Click "OK" to convert your object into a button symbol.

    • 5

Save your Flash document to preserve your work.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have created one button, copy and paste it to make quick reproductions.

  • Do not select "Graphic" or "Movie" when converting your object. Graphic and movie symbols are not interactive and will not function properly as buttons.
