Instructions

    • 1

Crochet a rectangle to make the base of your hat. Make your rectangle 8 inches wide by 18 to 20 inches long. (In general, toddler hats should be approximately 8 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches in circumference.)

With needle and thread, sew up the sides of your rectangle to make it into a hat shape. Use a gathered stitch at the top to round out the top of the hat, or leave it rectangular to keep it pointy. If the hat turns out to be too tall, roll the bottom edge up to make a brim. Then the hat can grow with the child.

Cut shapes out of felt and sew them onto the hat to make it funny and to personalize it for the child. Some ideas:
Cut large eyes and pointed teeth out of felt and make the hat into a monster. Add pointed horns or colorful spots.
Cut flowers or hearts out of foam and sew them all over the hat. Cut a strip of foam fringe and sew it to the top to finish the look.
Cut long bunny ears out of pink and white foam and cut a bunny face features to match. Use this same method to make a bear or a cat hat.
