How to Crochet Hair Holders

Crocheted hair accessories come in many forms. You can use your crocheting skills to make headbands, kerchiefs, flowered bobby pins or barrettes, and hair holders or ties. Use brightly colored yarns in worsted weight with a size US G hook to make your hair holders in an ideal size for any hairstyle.

Instructions

    • 1

Crochet a beginning chain stitch, using 50 stitches. This will form the length of your hair holder.

    • 2

Make three single crochet stitches in the second chain from the hook and the next 19 stitches. This will give a spiraled, curly look to the end of your hair holder.

    • 3

Make one single crochet stitch in each of the next 10 chain stitches. This will be the center of your hair holder.

    • 4

Make three single crochet stitches in each of the remaining stitches from your foundation chain. This will add a second spiraled section to your hair holder.

    • 5

Use the hair holder to tie around a ponytail in your hair. Use a hair elastic to tie the ponytail, then tie the crocheted hair holder around it and secure with a knot or a bow. Or tie the hair holder directly to a ponytail elastic, and then tie this around the hair in a ponytail style.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make shorter versions of this project and sew them onto hair barrettes for a short hair accessory. Or tie one around a headband instead of a ponytail elastic.

  • Use cotton yarn for this project so it will not cause as much friction and static in the hair as acrylic or wool yarns would.
