How to Replace a Garbage Disposal Splash Guard
Every garbage disposal unit comes with a flexible rubber cover over the top of the sink drain called a splash guard. A splash guard opens up in the middle and will allow you to feed water or food items into a garbage disposal while keeping liquids and smaller food particles from splashing back into the sink. Eventually every splash guard is going to wear out from normal wear and tear, and will need to be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Turn off the breaker switch for your garbage disposal unit. Do not take chances with the wall switch. Turn off the power at the source.
-
2
Remove the drain pipe from the side of the disposal unit with a flat blade screwdriver. Unscrew the screws in a counterclockwise direction and gently pull both the pipe and the sealing gasket free of the unit.

-
3
Press the screwdriver between the dog-ear connections where the unit meets the sink. This will act like a T-handle, then turn this in a counterclockwise rotation for about a quarter of a turn. The disposal unit will unlock and fall free.
-
4
Reach into the top of the unit and pull out the old splash guard. Press the new one back in its place.
-
5
Push the disposal unit back into its unlocked position and again use your screwdriver as a T-handle. Turn the unit a quarter turn clockwise to lock it back into place.
-
6
Replace the drain pipe and turn on the breaker switch.
