How to Get Change of Address Forms
People move and change addresses for a variety of reasons. No matter what your reason for moving, it is important to complete the proper paperwork when you have moved into your new home. States have different laws regarding declaring a new residence, and these laws and regulations should be learned and followed to avoid complications. In California, for example. it is law that you must notify the state Division of Motor Vehicles within 10 days of changing your address.

Check with your local post office and see if it has a form. If it does not, go online to your state's DMV website and download the change of address form. Make sure to read the form over and be sure that you meet all the requirements specified (you must have a driver's license in that state, you must have a Social Security number, etc.).

Print the form and fill it out carefully and accurately. Double-check to ensure there are no errors, then mail the change of address form to DMV.

Contact your local DMV branch after four to five business days to ensure that the form has been received.

If there is an error downloading the form, you can call any DMV office at (800) 777-0133 and ask that a form be mailed directly to you. This should take five business days. Fill out the form carefully and accurately, then send it in to your local DMV.

You can also visit your local DMV office in person, fill out a change of address form, and give it to a technician there. In turn the technician will give you a Change of Address Certificate card to fill out. Carry this card with your license at all times. Be sure to look up local state laws regarding notification of change of address. In addition, change of address forms can be sent to or delivered in person to the post office, which will ensure it is documented and sent to the proper authorities.
