How to Add Rhinestones to a Veil

Rhinestones are often seen on bridal veils, adding extra detail and sparkle. Buying an unadorned veil and adding your own rhinestones is not only cheaper than purchasing an embellished veil or having rhinestones professionally mounted but also adds a personal hand-crafted touch for your special day. By adding your own rhinestones, you can be sure that your veil's embellishments will match your bridal gown just how you want them to. Veils are usually made from tulle fabric, which is moderately easy to work with. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Mounting

    • 1

Lay the veil out carefully on a flat work surface. Smooth out the material so there are no wrinkles in the tulle.

    • 2

Decide exactly where each stone will be placed and use a fine-tipped fabric pen to make a small mark on the fabric at each point where you want to mount a stone.

    • 3

Push the Tiffany mount up through the tulle so that one of the spots you've marked is in the center of the mount. The flat center of the mount should be underneath the fabric and the prongs should be pointing up through the material.

    • 4

Place the rhinestone inside the prongs of the mount. Fold the prongs over the stone so that it the stone is encased inside the mount.

    Sewing

    • 5

Lay the fabric of the veil out on a flat surface so that there are no wrinkles.

    • 6

Use a fine-tipped fabric pen to make a small mark on the fabric at each point where you want to sew a rhinestone to the veil.

    • 7

Thread the beading needle. Push the needle up through the veil at one of the spots you've marked.

    • 8

Push the needle through the holes on the bottom of the rhinestone. Holding the rhinestone in place, loop the needle back down through the veil fabric.

    • 9

Keep looping the needle through the veil and back through the holes under the rhinestone until the stone is secured tightly to the veil. Give the stone a slight tug to check that it is held tightly.

    • 10

Tie a knot in the thread underneath the rhinestone and cut off any excess thread that remains.

    Gluing

    • 11

Cover a flat work surface with wax paper, then lay out the veil so that there are no wrinkles.

    • 12

Use a fine-tipped fabric pen to make a small mark on the fabric at each spot where you want to glue a rhinestone.

    • 13

Apply a small dot of fabric glue to the veil at one of the spots you've marked. Press the rhinestone into the glue and hold for five to ten seconds.

    • 14

Allow the glue on all of the stones to dry completely before moving the fabric.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are gluing the rhinestones, use only fabric glue, as other types of strong-hold glue will discolor the back of the stone and cause it to appear yellow.

  • If you've glued stones to your veil, do not have the veil dry cleaned, as it will discolor the rhinestones and glue.
