How to Get Rid of the Auto Search on Mozilla Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox browser features several helpful auto-complete functions. For example, they can help you find a Web address from a partial entry into the address bar, or they can provide you with related searches as you type into the Web search bar. If you want to disable these features, they can be turned off, but this requires changing settings in the "about:config" section of Firefox, which is somewhat challenging.

Instructions

  1. Disable Address Bar Search

    • 1

Open Firefox and type "about:config" without quotes into the address bar. Press "Enter."

    • 2

Type "browser.urlbar" in the filter field. Click the line "browser.urlbar.matchBehavior," and change the value to "0." Do the same with the line that says "browser.urlbar.maxRichResults."

    • 3

Close Firefox and open it again. The address bar should no longer automatically search through your history and bookmarks.

    Disable Search Bar Results

    • 4

Open Firefox and type "about:config" in the address bar. Press "Enter." Type or paste "browser.search.suggest.enabled" into the filter bar.

    • 5

Look for the value "browser.search.suggest.enabled." If it is set to "True," double click it to change it to "False."

    • 6

Restart Firefox. The auto-suggestion feature should now be disabled.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can enable many features again by simply reversing the value ("False" changed to "True," "0" changed to "1," etc.).

  • Unless you know what you are doing, it is not recommended that you change any additional settings in the "about:config" section of Firefox, as some changes could cause errors.
