How to Make Jewelry with Plexiglass

Using plexiglass to make jewelry gives you a versatile medium to make expressive jewelry that represents your style and taste. With plexiglass, you can add artwork, paint and even add photos and prints to the surface. Once you master the trick of correctly scoring and cutting the plexiglass, you can make jewelry not only for yourself, but also handmade jewelry tailored to your friends and family.

  • Plexiglass sheet
  • Cardstock or chipboard
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Craft knife
  • Heavy-duty utility scissors or coping saw
  • Acrylic paints
  • Clear acrylic sealer

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a pattern to create your jewelry piece. Trace or print the pattern onto the cardstock.

    • 2

Cut out the pattern piece from cardstock or chipboard.

    • 3

Place masking tape on top of the plexiglass, over the areas where you’ll cut out your pattern piece. This will keep the utility knife from slipping across the plexiglass once you begin scoring.

    • 4

Place the pattern piece over the taped areas and trace around the pattern piece with a pen or pencil. Insure that you make the lines dark enough that you can see them once you remove the pattern piece.

    • 5

Score along the edges of the pattern with your craft knife. Run your knife along the pattern lines several times to achieve a deep score that will allow you to remove the plexiglass from its sheet.

    • 6

Cut along the score lines with heavy-duty utility scissors or a coping saw.

    • 7

Decorate your plexiglass piece by painting it with acrylic paints. Add words, designs or other embellishments to make the piece uniquely you.

    • 8

Spray the piece with clear acrylic sealer. Allow the sealer to dry before continuing.

    • 9

Drill a small hole in the top of the piece using a rotary tool or hand drill.

    • 10

Attach a jump ring through the drilled hole. You can now attach the plexiglass piece to a necklace chain, bracelet or, for smaller plexiglass pieces, earring hooks.
