How to Hook Up My Laptop to My PC to Access the Internet

Connecting your laptop to a wireless network used to mean you needed a wireless router, but with the introduction of a new program called "Connectify" you can use your Windows 7 computer's WiFi card to broadcast a WiFi signal instead. This is not better than a wireless router, but it is a viable alternative if saving money is a necessity. All computers that are either sharing or accessing the internet via "Connectify" need to have a WiFi card installed. The host computer can share its wired or wireless connection and broadcast it through WiFi.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the program Connectify. Connectify allows you to use your WiFi card as a WiFi router for all of your similarly equipped computers. The software is free and updated frequently.

    • 2

Open Connectify. After it loads, you will see the settings menu. In the space entitled "WiFi Name," enter a name for your connection. In the "Password" space, enter in a password. If you don't, outside computers can use the connection as well.

    • 3

Choose which connection you would like to share from the "Internet" dropdown menu. If you are connected to the Internet with a wire from your modem, select "Local Area Connection." If you are using a WiFi connection, select "Wireless Internet Connection."

    • 4

Click the "Refresh" button on the top right side of the "Connectify" menu and your Internet sharing will begin. Turn on your laptop and locate the system tray in the lower right corner of the screen. Click on the "Wireless Networks" icon and select the network you just created. Enter in the password and you will be connected to the Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • The host computer must be running Windows 7 in order for Connectify to work.
