      Paddle into the direction of the whirlpool rotation and use centrifugal force to propel you to the outside of the whirlpool.

      Paddle downward and in the direction you are being pulled. Do not paddle in the opposite direction of the whirlpool, because this will pull you into the vortex.

      Paddle into the vortex and against its grain if you get so far that you are almost directly in the vortex. As you reach it, slide the stern of your craft against the grain of the whirlpool and you should miss the vortex.
