How to Improve at Reading English

Reading English can be more difficult than just learning to speak the language. Reading English requires using your brain to read and understand what the author is trying to say while creating a mental picture. Learning to read English makes speaking English easier as well. There are many ways to learn how to read English more fluently and to improve your reading skills.

      Read at your correct level. Reading something that is lower level can be boring. Reading too high a level can be frustrating. When it becomes progressively easier, you can up your reading level.

      Note new vocabulary. If you run across a word that you do not know, write it on a note card. Later on you can take the cards and look up the definitions. Mark them in the book that you are reading, so that you can reread the section with the understanding of the word. You will want to try to figure it out with context clues first, but follow up with looking it up in the dictionary or thesaurus and reread with the knowledge that you have discovered.

      Read frequently. The more you read , the more you will be exposed to new words, and the more you will learn to enjoy reading. Set realistic goals for reading. Try 15 to 20 minutes per day of reading. Everyday reading is far more beneficial than just a few times a week. Read as much as you can , when you can.

      Read about your interests. If you are interested in what you are reading, you are more likely to continue reading. You can read magazines, newspapers or even instruction manuals for new gadgets you have bought. You can even try a poem book or a comic book. Any material is okay, as long as you are reading at your level.

      Read aloud. Reading aloud by yourself allows you to hear words that you may be mispronouncing. Reading to someone else can give you feedback on how to say a word.
