How to Create a Mask in Macromedia Flash

In Macromedia Flash, masks can be a very useful tool. A mask layer reveals the layer below it only where the mask and the masked layer intersect. You can think of a mask layer like a spotlight and the layer below like what the spotlight illuminates: as the spotlight moves around, the layer below it is revealed, but nothing outside of the spotlight is shown.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a new movie file by going to "New," "Flash document."

    • 2

Change the name of "Layer1" to "Masked" by double-clicking the layer.

    • 3

Choose the "Rectangle" tool from the toolbox, and click and drag to create a large rectangle.

    • 4

Click the "New Layer" button on the bottom-left corner of the Timeline. Type "Mask" as the name of this new layer. In order to create a mask, the mask must be above the layer which is to be masked.

    • 5

With the Mask layer selected, click the "Oval" tool, and select a different color than the rectangle. Click and drag to draw an oval over the rectangle.

    • 6

Right-click the layer named "Mask" and select "Mask" from the menu. The rectangle you drew in Step 3 should disappear, and the oval you drew in the previous step should turn the same color as the rectangle.
