How to Install Paving Stones Over a Concrete Patio

Though it is still widely used in today's construction, it is most commonly used to suit aesthetic needs instead of structural. Paving stones can add a natural look to just about any outdoor environment at a generally low cost with minimal labor. Instructions

    • 1

Mix the mortar in the wheelbarrow, using the square shovel; refer to the mortar packaging for mixing instructions.

    • 2

Apply a small amount of mortar mix to the concrete patio surface (about 2 square feet by 1 inch thick), and spread it evenly using the brick trowel. Start in a corner of the patio so you can work your way outward.

    • 3

Set a paving stone over the mortar in the corner of the patio, lining up the edges of the paving stone with the edges of the concrete patio. Set the 12-inch level on top of the paver to ensure it is level. Tap the paver with the rubber mallet to correct, as necessary.

    • 4

Set the rest of the paving stones over the patio, repeating steps 2 and 3 and working your way outward from the corner. Cut paving stones to fit using the tile saw, as necessary. Refer to the tile saw owner's manual for operation and safety instructions.

    • 5

Allow the mortar to cure before walking on set paving stones; refer to mortar packaging for curing timetables.

    • 6

Evenly spread a thin layer of bedding sand (less than 1/8 inch) over the top of the set paving stones, and sweep with a push broom to distribute the sand to the joints between the paving stones.
