How to Install Tires Onto Rims

The process for replacing a tire on a rim is the same for almost all tires and rims. Whether you are mounting the tire on the rim of an All Terrain Vehicle, car or truck, all you're going to need is a crowbar to pry the tire onto the rim. Any supercenter or hardware store will sell crowbars or another form of pry bar for the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lug nut from the old tire using the tire iron. Jack up the car using the jack and pull the tire off of the car. Use scissors to cut the old tire off the rim, if necessary.

    • 2

Place the new tire over the rim and press down to pop the tire onto the rim as best you can. Press down on the tire until it can no longer be pushed onto the rim.

    • 3

Spray the tire, rim, and crowbar tip with WD-40 and place the curved end of the crowbar between the inner side of the tire and the inner side of the rim.

    • 4

Lift up on the crowbar to pry the tire onto the rim. You will need to do this all the way around the rim, inch by inch. Once you have the inner side of the tire completely onto the rim, push the tire to the inner side of the rim.

    • 5

Slide the curved side of the crowbar between the outer side of the tire and the rim. Lift up on the crowbar, sliding the tire onto the rim. Work your way around the rim until the tire is completely secure on the rim.
