How to Bypass a Web Filter for Gmail
Gmail is a free email service provided by Google. The email service is accessible via Web browser or an email client program such as Microsoft Outlook. Gmail users often must access email from a remote location that filters direct access to the Gmail Web address. If you find yourself in this situation, there are several ways to bypass a Web filter to access your Gmail based on the user agreement restrictions for the remote location that is providing Internet access.

1
Open the Web browser on the computer from which you are attempting to access Gmail. Input the secure uniform resource locator for Gmail (mail.google.com) in your Web browser and attempt to access Gmail directly. Many Web filters will only preclude access to your Gmail via the unsecure login page.

2
Navigate your Web browser to the Google translation page (translate.google.com). Enter the Google Gmail URL in the text field box to translate. Select any language that uses an alphabet similar to English on the "Translate From" pull-down menu. Choose "English" in the "Translate Into" pull-down menu and select the "Translate" menu option. Since the page will already be in English, the Gmail login will appear on the screen. This option will not work if the Web filter also bans the Google translation URL.

3
Find a proxy server to access Gmail. Top Bits is one resource that lists different proxy servers.

4
Open the URL of the proxy server in your Web browser and enter the Gmail URL in the Web navigation field on the proxy. If the first proxy website fails to load due to Web filtering, proceed down the listing of the available servers until you find one that is not filtered. Many organizations will ban the use of proxy servers on the user agreement, so verify that you are permitted to use a proxy server on your network before doing so.

Set up Gmail to forward email to your school or work email account if you cannot bypass the Web filter directly. To do so, log in to Gmail and select the "Settings" menu choice. Then choose the "Forwarding and Pop/Imap" menu option and select the "Forward a Copy of Incoming Email" radio button and enter your work or school email in the text field. Choose "Save Changes" and your email will be forwarded around the Web filter in place on your school or work network.
