How to Get Rid of Fungus on Trees

According to North Dakota State University, various types of fungi infect trees. Once a fungus has infected a tree, caring for the tree properly may get rid of the fungus and save the tree. Treat the fungus as early as possible to avoid a large fungus infestation. Although some fungi attack only certain types of trees, other varieties may be spread throughout a lawn or community. Instructions

    • 1

      Spray trees with water frequently when you notice the powder of mildew or fungus starting to form on or around the tree.

      Mix 1 to 2 tbsp. of wettable sulfur with each gallon of water and spray on trees with fungal infections that do not respond to the water rinse. Do not spray sulfur on young trees in hot weather. Do not spray sulfur on walnut trees.

      Spray fungicide on the tree according to manufacturer's instructions if the sulfur and water rinse failed to eliminate the fungus.

  • Make sure your trees get proper watering, fertilization and pruning to help ensure their health.

  • Once certain fungi like shelf fungi harden and integrate into the tree's structure, you may not be able to eliminate the fungus completely. Because the fungus can weaken the tree's structure, secure the tree once it is compromised for safety. Prevent the tree from falling onto people or animals to avoid injury.
