How to Train in Primary Health Care

Careers in primary health care are available to those with the desire to help those in need. Training in primary health care is accomplished by choosing a career path and completing the appropriate program. Each primary health care position requires specific training. An individual can train in primary health care as a nurse. Nurses are high in demand. Nurses provide direct patient care and act as the communication hub between patients and health care providers.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply to college and the nursing program. Choose a college that has the desired nursing program (ADN, RN, MSN, LPN). Apply to the school by submitting an application, required school transcripts, essays, and financial aid papers. Most colleges require specific GPA, ACT or SAT scores for acceptance into the school and nursing program. Talk to an academic adviser to discuss the requirements for acceptance.

    • 2

Complete prerequisite courses needed for the nursing program. Most programs provide a well-rounded educational background as well as the information required to work as a nurse. Classes that must be taken before starting a program are called prerequisites. Anatomy, chemistry, mathematics, and English are prerequisites that must be completed prior to starting a nursing program. An individual must complete all required prerequisites to be officially accepted into a nursing program.

    • 3

Complete the nursing program classes and clinicals. A nursing program consists of classes designed to provide all information needed to work as a nurse. All classes must be passed with acceptable grades. Clinicals refer to the hands on experiences obtained by following a nurse in order to watch and practice the skills required to work as a nurse. Clinicals allow students to follow nurses in a variety of specialties to see the different types of nurses working in health care. The required number of clinical hours varies among programs.

    • 4

Pass the NCLEX (National Counsel Licensure Examination) exam to obtain license. After completion of a nursing program, an individual must take and pass either a national or a state test before getting their nursing license. NCLEX-RN is the exam that potential registered nurses must pass to receive a license. NCLEX-PN is the exam that must be passed by potential practical nurses to receive a license.

Continue your education. Education is an ongoing process in health care, nursing included. After receiving a license to practice as a nurse, an individual is required to complete continuing education classes to keep their license. Continuing education classes allow nurses to keep up with the constant changes that occur in health care. A nurse must complete a certain amount (which varies dependent upon the type of degree) of continuing education per year. Continuing education can be done both in a classroom or on-line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Study guides and tutors are available to help with classes and exams.
