How to Change the Tire on a Rim

Changing the tire on the rim of your All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) is one thing that everybody who owns one will have to do one day. Anytime you damage the tire on your ATV, you should replace the tire. This is not a difficult process, but it will take some strength to get the tire over the rim. The dealership where you purchased your ATV will have everything you'll need to get this job done the right way.

  • Wrench
  • Pry bar
  • WD-40
  • New tire
  • New inner tube

      Remove the nut that is securing the wheel to the ATV with the wrench. Pull the wheel off the ATV and let out any air that may still be inside the inner tube.

      Slide the pry bar between the tire and the rim. If it is difficult the slide the pry bar between the tire and the rim, then spray WD-40 onto the tire, rim and pry bar.

      Lift up on the pry bar to slide the tire over the edge of the rim. Do this around the entire rim to disconnect the tire from the rim. Pull the inner tube out from between the tire and the rim.

      Place the new tire over the rim and press down on the tire to pop the lip of the tire over the edge of the rim. Place the pry bar between the tire and the rim and lift up to get the tire completely over the edge of the rim. Place the inner tube between the rim and the tire, inserting the air valve into the air valve hole.

      Press the other side of the tire onto the rim and use the pry bar to get the lip of the tire over the edge of the rim. Fill the inner tube with air and mount the wheel back onto the ATV, using the wrench to replace the nut and secure the wheel on the ATV.
