How to Learn Tibetan Online

Learn the Tibetan language online with an efficient and effective language exchange learning method. Combine the convenience of online learning with conversational language practice. A language learning exchange coordinates learning by interacting with a Tibetan-speaking partner, by email, text and in voice chat environments.

Instructions

Learn Tibetan online using the language exchange (Cormier) method. Language exchange allows you to engage in conversational Tibetan with native Tibetan speakers. Half of the members of a small group are native speakers of one language, while the other members speak another language. Group time splits learning between the two languages.

Begin the language exchange experience by assessing the level at which you are suited to learn Tibetan. Assessment is accomplished by voice chat. According to My Language Exchange, beginners interact with pen pals by email and by text chat. (See References 2) Writing Tibetan in email and text to pen pals allows you to take time to absorb what you are communicating.

Form a small group and create lesson plans. The essence of language exchange is to learn from a native speaker who is a member of your group. That person, in turn, learns your native language. Use My Language Exchange to find native-Tibetan speaking partners. The service is free. Ideally, a study group includes four students.
Achieve learning by verbal and written practice. A lesson plan will account for time spent on each language. Group members can create lesson plans, which include learning phrases, verbs, slang and other mutually-defined language lessons. One way to exchange languages may include visiting a Nepal website. Practice navigating and investigating the site in Tibetan. (See Resources 2)

Meet with your group regularly. My Language Exchange recommends forming small groups of equal numbers of native speakers. For example, two native Tibetan speakers and two native English speakers comprise a sufficient small group. (See References 2) Try to match learning levels of group members.
