How to View Past Chat History in Facebook

Facebook is an online social networking site designed for friends and family to connect with each other and stay up-to-date on one another's activities. Founded in 2004, Facebook took the online community by storm and has become one of the most popular (if not the most popular) online communities, with millions of members. Facebook comes with a built-in chat feature that enables real-time chats between friends. While not viewable indefinitely, the past chat history for each friend in Facebook is available for some time.

Instructions

1. Log in to your Facebook account.

2. Click on the "Chat" bar at the bottom of the page. All of your friends available for chat will be displayed in the list. Notice whether your desired friend is logged in or not (friend must be "Online" in order to view past chat history). If they are logged in, continue.

3. Click on the friend's name to open a chat window. All available past chat history will be displayed at the top of the chat box.

Tips & Warnings

• According to Facebook, your past chats will not be permanently viewable: "While Chat History is saved from page to page, and even between login sessions, please note that it is not logged permanently."
