How to Run the X86 Version of Internet Explorer

Microsoft Windows operating systems (such as Windows 7, Vista and XP) come in two versions--X86 and X64 (32-bit and 64-bit). According to Microsoft, "The main differences between the 32-bit versions of Windows and the 64-bit versions of Windows relate to memory accessibility, memory management and enhanced security features." Windows 64-bit systems require 64-bit drivers, but most 32-bit software programs are still compatible. These systems often have two versions of Internet Explorer installed--one an X64 program and the other X86. If your 64-bit (X64) Internet Explorer is not working, you may need to run the 32-bit (X86) version instead.

Instructions

1. Open "My Computer" (or "Computer" in Windows 7 and Vista) and double-click on your "C:" drive.

2. Double-click on the "Program Files (x86)" folder. This is where 32-bit (X86) programs are stored in 64-bit (X64) systems. Double-click on the Internet Explorer folder.

3. Double-click to open the iexplore.exe file. The X86 version of Internet Explorer will now open up on your computer.

Tips & Warnings

• You can create a shortcut to the X86 version of Internet Explorer on your desktop. To do so, right-click on the iexplore.exe file, mouse over "Send To," then click "Desktop (create shortcut)."
