How to Determine Who Has a Network Excel Spreadsheet Open
There are several advantages to hosting an Excel spreadsheet on a network server. Information and data can be shared across the office or team. Collaborative efforts are increased. The spreadsheet is housed in a centralized location where it is safe from attacks against individual computers. However, the downside is that there can come a time when you need to use or edit the spreadsheet but it is locked by another user. In this instance, it is quite easy to see who is using the spreadsheet at the time.

1
Open the spreadsheet. A box will appear that says that the spreadsheet is locked for editing by a certain person. The office member's network name will also appear in the box so you can see who has it open. Many times the person's network name is the first initial in their first name followed by their last name.

Check with office members. This is quite easy if you have a small team. If you are working in a small cubicle area, you can just ask if anyone has it open. If your offices are spread out, sending a quick email to team members inquiring if anyone has the spreadsheet open takes only a few minutes.

Ask the network administrator. Send a quick call to the network administrator to see if the spreadsheet is opened and, if so, who has it open. This is the optimal solution for large groups where the pop-up box in Step 1 didn't list a name for who has the sheet locked.
