How to Cut Transom

The transom is a panel located at the rear of most small boats. Built using layered materials, typically fiberglass and wood, transoms are often cut to make modifications or repairs. Whether you wish to create a new door in your transom or replace a damaged area, cutting the material requires preparation and care to avoid damaging the hull of the boat or any objects that may be connected with the transom.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area of the transom you intend to cut using a China marker. The markings can be removed later with household cleanser.

    • 2

Remove any equipment attached to the transom that may get in the way of making your cut, such as cables, hoses or an engine.

    • 3

Remove the rub rail placed along the top of the transom if cutting from the top. To remove the rail, remove the end caps from the rail sides. Remove the insert strip that runs through the center of the rail through one of the ends. Unscrew the rail from the hull then raise the rail from the transom top.

    • 4

Place your safety goggles on for eye protection. Place the reciprocating saw against the transom with the base plate of the saw flat against the surface. Tilt the blade so that it is parallel to the transom with the point placed so that when you tilt the saw blade against the transom it hits the marked line.

    • 5

Set the saw on high speed and begin cutting from the top corner of your marking on the transom with the blade tilted forward. Cut into the transom and continue to tilt the blade without moving the saw until the blade is perpendicular to the surface. Cut downwards with the sawblade using the line as a guide. Use this method to cut the remaining marked areas on the transom.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be aware of where the end of your saw blade is, when cutting, to prevent accidentally placing a hole in your hull.
