How to Make a Girl's Scarecrow Costume
Most people probably picture the straw man from "The Wizard of Oz" when they think of a scarecrow. Girls can make equally good scarecrows, especially during Halloween. While it's easy to picture the stuffed shirt and painted nose, it's not so easy to wear straw as part of a costume. The tips are prickly and uncomfortable against skin. Masking tape not only holds straw in place but also protects you against scratches. If you don't have access to real straw, you can use craft store straw.

1
Wear a checkered or plaid flannel shirt on top. Stuff the inside with soft T-shirts to give it bulk. Have straw sticking out the ends of your sleeves by attaching the ends to soft wristbands. Wrap masking tape around the wristband to hold the straw in place. Conceal the wristband under the sleeve near the cuff, where it won't be seen.

2
Wear a blue denim skirt or overalls for the scarecrow's bottom half. If you choose the skirt, wear tights or leggings to keep straw from scratching bare legs. Attach some long pieces of straw to your legs by binding straw with masking tape just above the skirt's hem on the inside. If you choose overalls with a front pocket on top, tuck some straw inside so it sticks out.

3
Wear your hair in two ponytails or braids hanging over your shoulders, or buy a wig and tie bows to it. Add a floppy hat or straw hat on top. If you want, tape straw underneath the brim with masking tape so it sticks out.

4
Use watercolor paints to paint a pink triangle, with one point up, on the tip of the nose.
-
5
Wear soft gray or brown gloves if you find the straw irritates your skin. This will protect your hands so you can wear the costume longer.
-
6
Wear scruffy brown boots on your feet. Keep the design as plain as possible.

7
Use masking tape or a cord with Velcro to secure a toy bird to your shoulder or your hat as an accessory. A stuffed crow, raven or blackbird works well. Look for them in craft stores around Halloween.

Tips & Warnings
Another option is to wear blue jeans. If the knees are torn, have straw sticking out by securing it with tape to the fabric inside the jeans. You can also wear tall socks to protect your legs if you wear a skirt.
