How to Change an EPS File Extension

The file extension .EPS stands for "encapsulated postscript file." The file type is a vector image format that contains the images, graphics and text that make up a digital vector design. EPS files are not only compatible with multiple graphics programs, including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and QuarkXpress, they are also compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. If you have an EPS file that you would like to change the file extension of, a free online conversion system makes it easy to convert the file into other file types, thereby changing the extension.

Instructions

  1. Media-Convert

    • 1

Pull up a web browser on your computer and go to the Media-Convert online converter (see Resources). Media-Convert can convert EPS files to over a dozen different file types.

    • 2

Upload a file by clicking into the "File" box on the Media-Convert screen. Go to the folder where the EPS file you want to change the extension of is located on your hard drive and double-click the name of the EPS file to upload it. Media-Convert should recognize the EPS file type automatically and fill in the "Input format" box for you, but if it doesn't you can choose "Encapsulated PostScript (.eps)" in the "Vector Document" section.

    • 3

Choose an output format for the EPS file. Options in the Media-Convert "Output format" drop-down include "Windows bitmap (.bmp)," "Graphics interchange format (.gif)" and "HyperText Markup Language (.htm,html)."

    • 4

Use the "Rename file to" box beneath the "Advanced Settings" heading if you want the converted file to have a name that is different than that of the original EPS file. If you do not enter a name in "Rename file to," Media-Convert automatically give the converted file the same name as the original file with a different extension.

    • 5

Press the "OK" button to start the Media-Convert conversion. Progress is monitored on the screen and, when the conversion process is complete, a download link is made available. Click the link and choose the "Save" option. Press "Save" in the window that comes up to save the converted EPS file to your computer.

    ReaConverter

    • 6

Download ReaConverter and Ghostscript from the Reasoft website (see Resources). Along with Ghostscript, ReaConverter can convert EPS files to different image formats, including JPG and GIF. Install the converter and Ghostscript app on your computer.

    • 7

Open the ReaConverter and navigate to the folder where the EPS file is saved in the first pane of the program window. Double-click the file name in the second pane to add it to the list of files to be converted.

    • 8

Choose the extension that you would like the EPS file to be changed to, the folder on your hard drive where you want the file to save and enter a name for the file. Click the "Start" button and the EPS file extension is changed to the new extension and saved to the selected folder.
