How to Convert a Two-Hand Brake Into One for Bicycles

Two-handed braking on a bicycle can be confusing and frustrating for new riders. Questions such as "Which one is the front brake?" and "Will I flip over if I pull too hard?" are common and forgivable. Riding a bicycle without a coaster brake can take getting used to, but can be made easier by installing a dual-pull brake lever that activates both brakes with one pull.

Instructions

    • 1

Set your bicycle in a work stand or on its kickstand so it won't tip or fall while you're working.

    • 2

Remove the handlebar grips from both sides of the bike's handlebars. If necessary, you may use compressed air to loosen the grips.

    • 3

Use a hex wrench or small combination wrench to loosen the cable stop on the front and rear brakes. Allow the cables to slide through the cable stops.

    • 4

Use a hex wrench or small combination wrench to loosen the brake lever handlebar clamp on both sides of the handlebars. Remove the brake levers from the handlebar and set the brake cables aside.

    • 5

Slide the dual-pull brake lever onto one side of the handlebars. Which side you install the brake lever on is up to you, so choose the side most comfortable for your riding style. Tighten the dual-pull brake lever handlebar clamp until it does not rotate on the bars.

    • 6

Attach the cable from the front brake to the front brake cable slot on the dual-pull lever. Slide the cable through the front brake cable housing.

    • 7

Attach the cable from the rear brake to the front brake cable slot on the dual-pull lever. Slide the cable through the rear brake cable housing.

    • 8

Hold the front brake closed with one hand and use a hex wrench to tighten the cable stop onto the cable with the other. Tighten the cable stop on the rear brake in the same fashion.

    • 9

Slide your handlebar grips back into place and take the bike for a test ride. Use the brakes lightly at first to get a feel for the braking power of the dual-pull lever. While riding, you may adjust the balance of power to the brakes by adjusting the two barrel adjusters on the dual-pull brake lever.
