How to Replace Dodge Door Window Glass

If the window glass in any of your Dodge vehicle's doors is broken, cracked or otherwise damaged, you need to replace it soon before it becomes even more dangerous. The window glass is held in place within the door in its regulator and run channels. If you choose to replace the glass yourself, you need to consult with your mechanic or other expert for the size glass you need for your particular vehicle.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Door Panel

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable if the Dodge vehicle has any power controls on it. Roll down the window, before you do this, if the vehicle has power windows.

    • 2

Detach the window crank, if the door has a manual window, by inserting a hooked tool into the hole behind the crank to remove the clip. A tool specifically for this task is available at auto parts stores. If the door has power controls, pry them off the trim panel with a trim stick and disconnect the electrical connector.

    • 3

Remove the door handle if needed--models such as the Ram require this--by removing its screw behind the handle. Remove all retaining screws to the trim panel--the most common locations for the screws are near the bottom, behind the handle and near the rearview mirror. These screws usually require a Phillips head screwdriver, and you may need to pry away smaller trim panels to access them.

    • 4

Lift the trim panel upward to release it from its hooks or clips and remove it from the door. Unplug any electrical connectors that are behind the door. On some models such as the Durango or Dakota, you will need to disconnect the handle from the panel.

    • 5

Peel away the plastic watershield on the door, making sure you don't tear it.

    • 6

Disconnect and remove any speakers that are in the door by removing their screws with the Phillips head screwdriver, pulling the speaker out and disconnecting the electrical connector.

    Replacing the Glass

    • 7

Pry the weatherstripping off the top end of the door by grasping it near the outer edge and pulling it off.

    • 8

Unscrew the bolts that secure the glass run channels--these bolts often require a Torx wrench. On most Dodge front doors, there is one set of bolts running near the inner edge of the door. The rear door has two run channels.

    • 9

Raise the window until you can access the glass retaining nuts through one of the access holes and remove the nuts--these will likely require a socket wrench. Tilt the window glass forward and lift it out of the door; use extreme caution if the window is cracked or broken.

    • 10

Lower the replacement glass into the door and slide it into position within the regulator. Install the nuts with the socket wrench to secure the glass.

    • 11

Bolt the run channel(s) back into place within the door using the Torx wrench. Insert the weatherstripping back onto the top of the door. Reinstall the speaker.

    • 12

Reinstall the door panel in the reverse order of removal, beginning with the watershield. Look for any clips that may have come out of the panel and reinstall them prior to attaching the panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • The exact type of screwdriver and wrench needed to remove the screws and bolts can vary depending on the exact year and model of your Dodge vehicle.
