How to Add Refrigerant to Window Air Conditioners
Throughout the life of your window air conditioner, the unit may be need to be recharged with refrigerant. Signs that your unit may need to be recharged are if the air conditioner begins to blow out warm air or does not cool the area efficiently. You can purchase a whole new unit, but that can be rather expensive. To save money and increase the lifespan of your window unit, recharge the air conditioner yourself with a refrigerant recharge kit, which can be purchased at any local hardware store. Spread out a rag or towel on the floor; remove the air conditioner from the window and carefully place on the rag. The rag or towel will protect the floor from scratches or leaks.

Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws that hold the metal casing in place. Slide the metal casing off the unit and place to the side. Removing the casing will reveal the compressor, which can be identified as a metal cylinder with two hoses attached to it.

Connect the service valve to the larger hose on the compressor. The service valve is the larger of the two valve connectors that are included with the can of refrigerant.

Connect the tap valve to the smaller hose that is located on the compressor. The tap valve is the smaller of the two valves within the kit.

Power on the air conditioner and turn to the highest setting; this will allow the refrigerant to flow and charge the unit.

Continue to allow the air conditioner to charge until the refrigerant is empty. Once charging is done, turn the air conditioner off and disconnect the valves from the compressor.

Replace the metal casing on the back of the air conditioner and tighten the screws secure the case. Insert the air conditioner back into the window and install as necessary.
