How to Sheer Sheet Metal
Shearing sheet metal is an important part of sheet metal fabrication. If the sheet metal is sheared improperly, you will have a difficult time laying out and forming the sheet metal. To properly shear sheet metal, the sheet metal needs to be perfectly square. This requires you to pay careful attention to all your measurements and ensure that the sheet metal remains aligned while you are shearing the sheet metal. Put on the leather work gloves to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the sheet metal.

Turn on the power shear, ensure that the bed of the shear is clear of debris and slide the sheet metal onto the bed of the power shear.

Adjust the back-gauge of the power shear to cut the sheet metal 1/2-inch larger than the metal's final cut size by either turning the back-gauge handle of a manual back-gauge or depressing the button for an automatic back gauge.

Depress the foot pedal of the power shear to lower the dogs and cut the width of the sheet metal.

Rotate the sheet metal 90-degrees to set the edge you cut in the previous step along the squaring bar attached to the bed of the shear.

Place the end of you tape measure at the end of the shear bed, directly below the shear's cutting blade and pull the tape measure along the sheet metal.

Slide the sheet metal to a length one-inch longer than the length you need to cut the sheet metal, push the sheet metal against the squaring bar of the shear and depress the pedal of the power shear to cut the sheet metal.

Rotate the sheet metal 90 degrees and push the sheet metal against the shear's squaring bar.

Stretch the tape measure along the sheet metal as you did in Step 6, slide the sheet metal to the metal's final width dimension and depress the pedal of the power shear to make the final width cut.

Repeat Steps 8 and 9 to cut the sheet metal to the final length measurement.

Remove the sheared sheet metal from the bed of the power shear.
