How to Understand Proofs in Geometry

Understanding proofs in geometry can be challenging for a beginner. A great part of understanding mathematical proofs is the ability to visualize abstract scenarios. This gets easier with practice, but there are several methods that will help you progress. As you learn how to understand geometry proofs you also get a greater sense of the mathematics behind formulas that are used in everyday life. This also means that your chances of better grades in school increase.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Take a quick look over the proof in front of you. You do not need to understand the proof yet. The purpose of this step is to learn the direction of the proof to see where it starts and ends.

    • 2

Make a large drawing with plenty of room for notes of the geometrical figure on which you are doing the proof.

    • 3

Use your pencil and copy down the first step. Look at how they got to the second step and try to understand the step by making notes on the geometrical shape on your paper.

    • 4

Since you know the end result, try to imagine a way to getting from your step to the conclusion. If you do not see it, repeat step 2 and 3 for the next step on your proof. Do this until you reach the conclusive result.

    • 5

Close the book and leave a blank sheet of paper in front of you. Start from the beginning of the proof and work your way to the end without looking at the instruction unless you absolutely must.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you understand the proof, you should redo it several times. Mathematics takes practice, and the more you do, the more you will understand.

  • If you get frustrated, take a break. Close the book and start again at a later time.
