How to Hat Size a Batting Helmet

Batting helmets may not seem to serve much purpose, but every once in a while a helmet saves a batter from getting a nasty concussion, or worse. Although batting helmets are relatively basic compared to a lot of protective sports gear, it is still important to make sure to wear the correct-sized batting helmet.

Instructions

Measure the circumference of your head just above your ears using a tape measure. Most heads range between 20 and 24 inches. If you know your fitted hat size, this will help you to size a batting helmet. Fitted hat sizes range from six to eight inches.

Look at a batting and catcher's helmet sizing chart. Sporting goods stores typically have sizing charts. Use your head measurement or fitted hat size to determine the size of the batting helmet you should wear. Depending on the size of your head, you will wear anything from an extra small helmet to a 2X large helmet.

Make sure your batting helmet has a snug fit, but not so snug that it causes a headache. When you move your head from side to side the helmet should remain in place.

Practice taking pitches with the batting helmet on before using it during an organized game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes batting helmets can block parts of a hitter's vision, which is unacceptable. If the hat feels right after a practice trial then you are ready for a real game.

  • Purchase a high quality helmet. The components of the helmet, such as the interior foam, are what protect you. Buying a cheap helmet makes you more vulnerable to injury.

  • Even though it is rare to get hit in the head by a baseball, there is still a chance it could happen on any pitch. Always wear a batting helmet to avoid unnecessary risk.
