How to Download Album Art Without an iTunes Store Account

Although you must have the iTunes program to upload and manage music on your iPod, you do not have to have an iTunes store account to get music or album art from other sources. The iTunes program has a variety of uses. However, its primary purpose is to manage your iPod from your computer screen. The iTunes program provides a portal for the iTunes store, but you do not have to use the store or create a store account.

For music in your iPod library that was not purchased from the iTunes store, you may not have album art to accompany the music you import into your iTunes/iPod Library. However, because the album cover and art are a part of the album's marketing package, it is likely you can find album art on the artist's official Website. Also, specialized search companies devoted to album art--such as albumart.org or art4tunes.com--will help you locate a thumbnail or picture file for free.

Instructions

  1. Getting the Art onto Your Computer

    • 1

Find a picture file or thumbnail of the album cover you wish to download. Your best odds for finding the official art are to search the artist's Website for graphics.

    • 2

Right-click the picture with your mouse or touch pad. A pop-up menu will appear. If you are using a Mac, the directions only change slightly: Click on the image with your mouse as you push "Option" on your keyboard. A pop-up menu will appear.

    • 3

Select "Save Image As." A browser window will appear. Select a picture type and file location for your picture file. Save it under a file name that will help you to easily locate it.

From your Computer to iTunes and Your iPod

    • 4

      Open iTunes.

    • 5

In the source panel (the vertical menu at the left end of the iTunes screen), select "Library." If your iPod is connected to your computer, you may select "Music" in the iPod section of your menu instead.

    • 6

In the main window, select a song by clicking the file to which you would like to associate your album art picture file. The file should be highlighted only; do not play the song.

    • 7

Right-click or control-click the highlighted song. A pop-up menu will appear. Select "Get Info." Click on the "Artwork" tab.

    • 8

Select "Add." A browser window will appear. Locate the album art picture file, then click "OK". Album art will now be associated with the music file. It will also automatically import when you move the file to your iPod library.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can apply one picture file to multiple music files at the same time. When highlighting music in iTunes, select as many files as you wish by holding the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard as you click on files with your mouse. Each file will stay highlighted. Right-click the selected files and click "Get Info" and then the "Artwork." Complete the directions.
