How to Become an Automotive Service Technician

A technician's job is to maintain and repair vehicles. The exact type of work a technician does, however, depends on his training. Some specialize in a specific brand of vehicle (for example, Ford), while others service all makes and models.

Instructions

    • 1

Take several high school courses that relate to this position, if possible. Suggested courses include math, creative arts, automotive tech, business & management, electronics & communications tech and entrepreneurship.

    • 2

Post-secondary technician programs provide career exploration through classroom hands-on experience and practice. Programs vary between each college, but tend to run for 6 to 12 months.

    • 3

Participate in a co-op placement or internship if it is available at your college. With this program, you'll get to work alongside an automotive service technician and experience first-hand what they do. Although you'll not be directly working with the individual, you will get a feel for the work environment and will be able to list the experience on your resume.

    • 4

Obtain a certification in different areas of automotive service. Although it's not mandatory, you can earn a certificate in different areas such as engine repair, brake systems, suspension, steering, heating and air-conditioning. You need at least two years of work experience to take the exam; however, things such as co-op placements may be substituted for a year's experience. For ASE certification for a Master Automobile Technician, you need to pass all examinations.
