How to Troubleshoot a DSL Installation
A digital subscriber line, or DSL, uses telephone networks to transmit data at high speeds. This allows customers who subscribe to telephone service to also have high speed Internet without having to install new wiring in their homes. A simple filter allows the equipment to separate the high frequency data signals from the phone signals, allowing the phone and Internet to be used at the same time. To troubleshoot a DSL connection, it is necessary to check all of the home equipment and software.

1
Turn off any firewall or virus software. This can prevent your computer from using the Internet connection.
-
2
Check the lights on the DSL router. These will indicate whether the Internet connection is still viable. If the "Internet" light on the DSL router is flashing abnormally or is unlit, this can indicate a problem with the connection outside your home. Contact your DSL provider to help fixing this.

-
3
Power cycle any devices between your computer and the DSL router, such as wireless routers. Unplug the device and wait for 60 seconds, then plug the device back in.
-
4
Power cycle the DSL router hub. This is the point where the Internet connection enters your home. Unplug the router, wait for 60 seconds, then reconnect the power supply.
-
5
Connect the computer directly to the DSL router using a network cable. If the Internet begins working, the problem lies with a device or wireless connection between the computer and router.
