How to Make a Coin Wrist Purse

Things You'll Need

  • 2 pieces of fabric for purse, 8" wide x 6" high
  • 2 pieces of fabric for liner, 8" wide by 6" high
  • All purpose zipper, 10 inch
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Zipper foot
  • Small swivel hook
  • Ribbon, 12 inches

Instructions

  1. Making the Coin Purse

    • 1

      Choose a fabric for the outside of the purse (fabric 1) and the lining (fabric 2). Place the zipper right side up on top of one piece of fabric 2. Fabric 2 should also be right side up. Line the zipper with the top edge of the 8-inch side of the fabric.

      Place fabric 1, right side down, on top of the other fabric and the zipper. Pin the pieces of fabric and the zipper together. Sew the pieces together along the zipper, using the zipper foot. Fold the fabrics so the wrong sides are together. Pin the fabrics together to keep the seams even. Sew the pieces together along the zipper. Be sure to catch fabric 1, the zipper and fabric 2.

      Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the right side of the zipper. Fold the fabrics so that both pieces of fabric 1 are on the left side of the zipper and both pieces of fabric 2 are on the right. Line up the edges of fabric 1 and pin them together. Start at the seam where all the pieces meet, sew the edge of fabric one. Sew the other side of fabric 1 but leave the bottom untouched. Reach through the bottom and unzip the zipper. Repeat this step with fabric 2.

      Trim away the excess from the edges of both fabrics. Turn the project so that the fabrics are right side out. Stitch the bottom of both fabrics closed. Tuck fabric 2 inside of fabric 1. Stitch along the bottom of the purse to join the lining and outside fabrics together.

    Making the Wrist Strap

      Fold the ribbon in half to create a loop. Slide the swivel hook on one side of the open end of the ribbon.

      Fold the ribbon edge ¼ inch through the swivel hook and stitch closed. Repeat with the other end of the ribbon. This will make a loop with the swivel hook attached.

      Press the two sides of the ribbon loop together. Stitch the pieces together ¼ inch above the swivel hook. This secures the hook at the bottom of the loop.

      Press the two sides of the ribbon loop together. Stitch the pieces together ¼ inch above the swivel hook. This secures the hook, leaving the loop open.
