How to Calm a Hyper Child Anywhere

Hyper children have an overabundance of energy.

No parent wants to be the parent of "that child" who yells, runs around, climbs on furniture and generally annoys other people with his wild behavior. However, most children will develop an overabundance of energy and activity some of the time, varying from the occasional bout of hyper behavior to an actual hyperactivity disorder, such as ADHD. If your child becomes too hyper -- either at home or in public -- a few techniques can help you calm him down.

Instructions

    • 1

Remain calm. If you get angry and start shouting at your child to calm down, it may just feed her hyper behavior. Speak quietly and calmly to your child to model the behavior you want her to adopt.

    • 2

Set clear rules for acceptable indoor and outdoor behavior. Make it clear that running, climbing and shouting are all activities that belong outside. If your child starts any of these behaviors while inside, send him outdoors to work off his excess energy.

    • 3

Go on a brisk walk with your child. The exercise will help her burn energy, and the repetitive motions may calm her down.

    • 4

Teach your child breathing techniques that will calm him down. Show him how to breathe in through his nose for three to five seconds and then breathe out through his mouth for three to five seconds. Have him breathe deeply whenever he starts becoming too hyper.

    • 5

Find ways to help your child relax. Massage her shoulders, back, temples or scalp to calm her down. Have her take a warm bubble bath if you are at home. Play classical or elevator music.

    • 6

Create a quiet room in your home where you child can go if he gets too hyper. Choose a room with a muted paint color, such as beige or light blue, and natural light. Keep toys he can play with quietly in the room, such as books, puzzles, and paper and crayons.

    • 7

Remove your child from the environment if nothing calms her down. If she remains too hyper despite your efforts to calm her down -- whether at the grocery store or a birthday party -- taking her out of an environment that is too stimulating may be the only way to help her calm down.
