How to Make a Button Hole on a Janome Harmony Sewing Machine
Each version of the Janome Harmony Sewing Machine has a different method of creating a buttonhole. The easiest to use--and what most Janome Sewing Machines come equipped with now--is the Automatic Buttonhole. Some Harmony models, including the Harmony 8048, 2041LX and 7061NX have an Automatic Buttonhole feature. While the name may be encouraging, making a buttonhole can be tricky the first few times you attempt it. Go slow and practice on scrap fabric until you are confident in your buttonhole-making skills.

How To Sew An Automatic Buttonhole
-
1
Remove the presser foot from the machine by depressing the small knob on the back of the presser foot. Attach the automatic buttonhole presser foot. It will be the largest of the presser feet, commonly labeled presser foot "R."
-
2
Adjust the stitch, stitch width and thread tension to accommodate the automatic buttonhole. Stitch selection should be "BH" for buttonhole, width should be long, and tension can be between one and five.
-
-
3
Expand the back of the presser foot to accommodate the button that will be used in the buttonhole. It is important that you place the button here, as its size will determine the size of the buttonhole.
-
4
Pull the thread from the needle and the bobbin to the left under the presser foot.
-
5
Mark the fabric where you would like the buttonhole to be, then place the presser foot in the appropriate starting position. The automatic buttonhole will begin sewing backwards, then right, the forwards.
-
6
Slowly depress the foot pedal and gently guide the fabric as the automatic buttonhole sews the buttonhole. The stitches will be two parallel zigzag lines, with a small gap in the middle. When the buttonhole has reached the starting point, stop the machine.
-
7
Cut the needle and bobbin threads, pull them away from the fabric and knot them. Place a pin at the far end of the buttonhole (the bartack) so that it runs perpendicular to the zigzag lines. Using the seam ripper, cut the fabric showing in between the two zigzag lines. Be careful not to cut the stitches. Remove the pin and the buttonhole is completed.

Tips & Warnings
While practicing the automatic buttonhole, consider folding the fabric in half and placing a piece of paper or interfacing between the layers for thickness and stability. If the stitches seem to be too crowded, adjust your stitch width to shorter stitches.
