How to Make a Clown Shirt
Whether for Halloween or a birthday, a clown always adds a little something extra to a party. Although it may be expensive to hire a clown performer or buy a clown costume from a store, it's rather simple and inexpensive to make a homemade clown costume. Besides hair and makeup, the clown shirt is the most essential part to any clown costume. With basic sewing skills, an oversized shirt and a few craft supplies, anyone can make a clown shirt in a short time.
Things You'll Need
- Multicolored, baggy long-sleeved t-shirt
- Purple tulle
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Large colorful buttons
- Elastic
Instructions

1
Cut a piece of tulle that is 4 inches wide and three times as long as the circumference of the collar of the long-sleeved t-shirt.
-
2
Sew a gathering stitch along one of the longer edges of the piece of tulle. Gather the fabric until it is just as long as the circumference of the collar of the shirt.
-
-
3
Sew the tulle, gathered edge down, onto the shirt collar. The tulle should encompass the entire collar and point upwards to form a ruffled collar.
-
4
Sew three large buttons in a straight line down the middle of the front of the t-shirt, spacing them about 3 inches apart.
-
5
Turn the shirt inside out. Hem the cuffs of the sleeves about 1/2 an inch, leaving an opening in each hem about 1 inch wide.
-
6
Cut two pieces of elastic that are each just long enough to wrap around your wrist. Thread one piece of elastic through one of the sleeve cuff hems, using the 1 inch opening. Gather the fabric as needed.
-
7
Sew the two ends of the elastic together and sew the 1 inch opening closed. Repeat this process with the other sleeve and turn the shirt right side out.
