How to Make a Faux Fur Cushion Cover
Making a faux fur cushion cover is a good project if you've never sewn with this fabric, since sewing faux fur is just a little different from sewing plain fabric. If you take the time to prepare the seams and remove caught fibers from them after sewing, the seams will be nearly invisible and your finished project will be nicely furry. Once you've made one cushion cover, you might be inspired to create more covers in various colors or animal prints.
Things You'll Need

- Sharp scissors or craft knife
- Quilter's pencil or marker

Preparing Faux Fur
-
1
Measure the length and width of the cushion. Add 1 inch to each measurement for seam allowances. You will cut two pieces of faux fur to these measurements.
-
2
Turn the faux fur to the wrong side. Mark the measurements on the fabric backing with a quilter's pencil or a marker. Repeat with the second piece.
-
-
3
Use a craft knife with a new blade or a very sharp pair of scissors to cut along the lines on the fabric backing. Cut the backing only, not the fur itself, and cut one piece at a time.
-
4
Turn the pieces of faux fur to the right side. Brush or comb the fur toward the middle of the pieces and away from the edges.
-
5
Place the faux fur with right sides together, making sure the pile on the fur is running in the same direction on both pieces. Pin all four sides together, using extra-long straight pins. Place the pins at a 45-degree angle to the seams rather than parallel to them.
-
6
Tape all of the raw edges with stabilizer or masking tape.
Sewing the Faux Fur
-
7
Sew the seams through the stabilizer or masking tape, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-inch opening in the center of one seam for turning.
-
8
Remove the stabilizer or masking tape and straight pins. Turn the cushion right-side out. Comb or pull away any fur that is caught in the seams.
-
9
Turn the cushion inside-out and trim the seams to 1/4 inch.
-
10
Turn the cushion cover right side out again. Use a crochet hook or pencil eraser to push out the corners.
-
11
Hand-sew the opening closed.

Tips & Warnings
Use the sewing-machine needle size recommended for faux fur by your sewing machine manufacturer. Consult your manual, if necessary.
Clean your sewing machine thoroughly after sewing faux fur, since it produces excessive lint.
Use a straight or zig-zag stitch for seaming faux fur. If the fibers are short, sew a test piece to determine whether the zig-zag stitches will be visible.
