How to Make a Colonial Shirt Using Doilies

When making colonial costumes, it may seem that the shirt is the most difficult piece of the costume to re-create. It might look like it would take an accomplished seamstress to sew all of those ruffles onto the shirt. However, it's quite simple to make a colonial shirt using a plain white long-sleeved T-shirt and a bunch of doilies. With basic sewing skills, this task can be achieved quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all of the doilies in half so that you now have 10 semi-circular doily pieces.

    • 2

Sew two half-doilies onto the collar of the shirt, allowing them to overlap slightly as they cover the collar. Sew them with the curved sides facing up.

    • 3

Sew a gathering stitch along the straight edge of three of the doily pieces. Gather each of the pieces until they are each three inches wide.

    • 4

Sew the three gathered doilies onto the front of the shirt, directly below the collar. Sew them in a row, one after the other, making sure that the curved edges are facing down.

    • 5

Sew a gathering stitch along the straight edge of four more doily pieces. Gather each of them until they are each three inches wide.

    • 6

Sew two gathered doily pieces onto the cuff of each sleeve, making sure that the curved sides are facing downward. The doilies should encircle the entire cuff, making the cuffs ruffled.
