How to Animate Photos in Photoshop 5

Animating photos in Photoshop can be tricky if you are unfamiliar with the process. The important thing to remember is that you have to create a layer for each item that you want to move. Animating objects in your Photoshop creations gives a sense of realism to some photos. It is also a relatively simple way to bring comics to life.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop 5 and create a file that has all of the elements you want to move in your image. To do this, create a different layer with each element, separating them and naming them appropriately. Selecting "Layers" and "New" in the top menu bar makes new layers.

    • 2

Select "Windows" and "Animation" to show the Animation palette.

    • 3

Click on the first frame in the Animation palette and turn off the visibility for all of the layers that you don't want to see. Turn off the visibility by clicking the eye icon to the left of the name of the layer.

    • 4

Add one frame of movement at a time by changing the visible layers. Simply turn off the visibility for any other layers that aren't supposed to be moving.

    • 5

Click the new frame icon (next to the trash can) on the Animation palette and add a final frame to your sequence.

    • 6

Select the group of layers that are going to be moving. In the Animation palette, simulate the movement by clicking on the object and moving it in the animation frame.

    • 7

Select "Tween" from the Animation palette menu by clicking in the upper right-hand corner.

    • 8

In the "Tween" dialog box, select "Previous Frame" for the "Tween With" option. Add nine frames and click "All Layers." Put a check mark in all three parameter boxes--"Position," "Opacity" and "Effects"--and click "OK" to close the dialog box.

    • 9

Hold down the "Shift" key and click on each of the animated frames in the animation palette. Click on the arrow next to where it says "1 sec" and change the time to "0.1 seconds."

    • 10

Select "File" and "Save for Web" from the top menu bar. Change the file type to "GIF." Click "Save" and name the file.
