How to Connect a 2Wire Wireless Modem

Wireless modems can become a bit of a pain to connect to, but, knowing the right information, you can easily establish a connection with your wireless modem and configure it. Prior experience in setting up wired modems would be helpful to have, especially since the process is similar. Since so many modems are different, you might have to also refer to your operation manual if you find yourself stuck at any point.

Instructions

  1. Connecting the Modem

    • 1

Find the power cable that came with your wireless modem.

    • 2

Connect the end of the cable with prongs coming out of it into a wall outlet or extension cord.

    • 3

Connect the remaining cylindrical end of the cable into the appropriate connector in the modem.

    • 4

      Turn your modem on.

Finding Out and Connecting to Your Modem's Default IP Address

    • 5

Search at the bottom of the modem (sometimes on other parts of it) for a sequence of four numbers separated by dots (i.e. 192.168.0.1). If you suspect that the modem's configured IP address has changed, press the reset button on the modem. The reset button might be inside of a small hole, so you might need a small, thin, blunt object to get to it. Do not use a sharp object or else it will probably damage the button.

    • 6

Look in your computer and go to the Start menu and click on "Control Panel".

    • 7

If your control panel is on category view, click on "Network and Internet Connections" and then click on "Network Connections". If your control panel is on classic view, just click on "Network Connections".

    • 8

Right-click on the connection labeled "Wireless Internet Connection".

    • 9

      Click "View Available Connections".

    • 10

On the new window that appears, try to find the connection pertaining to your modem. Look through your operation manual if it is not clear which connection you should select. Connect to the connection with the modem's name when you are done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sometimes modems do not have wireless capabilities enabled by default. In such a case, try configuring and connecting to your modem through Ethernet first and enabling wireless through its configuration console. You can open the configuration console by writing the modem's IP address on your browser. Usually, the modem has a menu link for wireless settings which you can access to adjust everything you must adjust.
