How to Add a Charm to a Rope Bracelet

Rope bracelets can give a nautical or rustic boost to any outfit. Rope bracelets, which include any bracelet that resembles actual rope, can be made from many types of materials such as hemp cord, yarn, metal wire or leather. No matter the material, a rope bracelet can be adorned with charms using a few simple tools and accessories including an end cap or a crimp end for a yarn, cord or leather bracelet.

Instructions

    • 1

Slip the nose of the needle-nose pliers inside a crimp end and slowly open the handle of the pliers to spread open the prongs. A crimp end is a hollow piece of metal that has four decorative prongs with a closed loop at the end. An end cap---an elongated, hollow metal cap with a closed loop at the end---does not have prongs to open.

    • 2

Dab a bit of glue on the first bracelet end. Slide the end of the bracelet into the crimp end or the end cap.

    • 3

With flat-nose pliers, carefully pinch two opposing crimp prongs tight around the cord, yarn or leather. Repeat for the second set of opposing prongs. If using an end cap, crimp down on the end cap just once to tighten it around the end of the bracelet. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the other end of the bracelet. Attach 1/2 of a clasp such as a toggle clasp to each end of the bracelet. A toggle clasp is made up of two components, a ring and a bar. To close the bracelet, slip the bar through the ring.

    • 4

Open a jump ring---a small ring used to link two components of a piece of jewelry---using pliers. Slide the jump ring through the closed loop at the end of one of the crimp ends or end caps on the bracelet.

    • 5

Slide the charm onto the jump ring. Pinch the jump ring closed with the flat-nose pliers.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for a rope bracelet made out of metal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful not to mar the metal of the crimp ends or end caps while pinching them with the pliers. If you don't have plastic-coated pliers, wrap masking tape around each jaw to keep the metal of the pliers from touching the metal of the crimp ends or end caps.
