Remove everything from the basement. All boxes, furniture and appliances must be out of the construction area. If you are only finishing part of the basement, stacking everything in the section not being finished is a fine solution. If the entire area will be remodeled, rent an on-site storage container to house your stuff.

Install a sump pump alarm and battery-powered backup pump. Most homes' sump pumps do not have backup mechanisms standard. In heavy storms with power outages, your new basement will flood without this in place.

Install a sump pump discharge line freeze guard. Most sump pumps eject the water outside the home via a pipe. If this pipe freezes, the water has nowhere to go except into your new basement. Freeze guards allow the water to escape from the pipe before backing up into the basement.

Install a vapor barrier on the walls to prevent water vapor from seeping through the foundation.

Run a dehumidifier to remove all moisture from the air.

Install a washing machine drain pan and alarm. The washing machine sits inside the drain pan, which will collect water if there's a leak. The alarm will alert you in time to shut off the machine before the water overflows into your basement.
