How to Convert QuickBooks from an Earlier Version

Converting QuickBooks from an earlier version is a task you can accomplish from within the QuickBooks interface.

Ensure your computer meets the system requirements for the new version of QuickBooks. Each new version has minimum system requirements you must meet in order to download and operate the software. Because minimum system requirements depend on the version of QuickBooks that you are using, visit the QuickBooks website to check requirements for your version (see Resources).

Click the green "Upgrade" button on the far right of the QuickBooks main menu. You will go to the QuickBooks website where you can purchase the newest version of the software. Download the required installation files. Locate the QuickBooks icon on your computer desktop screen.

Install the new version of QuickBooks. Double-click the QuickBooks icon on your desktop to start the process. QuickBooks will install new program files and transfer information from the older version to the new version. The first step in the process will be to back up existing files. After you complete your backup, QuickBooks installs the new version, and transfers your company information, preferences, lists and customized forms and reports.

Tips & Warnings
As long as your computer meets system requirements, you can upgrade from any earlier version of QuickBooks to the current version.
Do not fail to back up existing company files when performing a version upgrade. If the installation fails, you will lose valuable information.
