How to Troubleshoot Maytag Window Air Conditioners
Maytag air conditioners help control the temperature of rooms in your home during hot summer months. Though the air conditioning units run optimally under most conditions, you may occasionally have problems with the power, warm air coming out of the unit or ice forming on the air conditioner. These problems often do not require the assistance of a service technician. Troubleshoot your air conditioner to determine the problem and fix it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Unit Does Not Operate
-
1
Check that the power cord is securely plugged into the electrical outlet and that the power switch is in the "On" position.
-
2
Plug another device into the electrical outlet to ensure it is working. If the other device does not work, check the fuse box for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. Replace the fuse and reset the circuit breaker as needed.

-
3
Wait for the air compressor to turn on if you shut off then turned on the air conditioner quickly or if you quickly switched the temperature control to a warmer setting and then a colder setting.
-
4
Turn the temperature control to a colder setting. If the room is too cool, the sensor within the air conditioner will not start the compressor until the temperature control is set to a colder setting.
Air Is Not Cold
-
5
Adjust the switch from "Fan" to "Cool." When set to "Fan," the air conditioner circulates the air within the room. It will not produce colder air until it is set to "Cool."
-
6
Change the temperature control to a colder setting. If the air conditioner is set to a warmer setting and the room temperature is warm, the air conditioner will not turn on.
-
7
Check the temperature of the room. If the room temperature is below 70 degrees, the air conditioner will not turn on.
Ice Forming on Cooling Coil
-
8
Set the air conditioner to "Fan" to stop the air conditioner's compressor from running. The air circulated by the fan will defrost the ice. Make sure all of the ice is defrosted before running a colder air conditioner setting.
-
9
Clean the air filter. To clean the filter, open the front panel and pull the air filter out of the air conditioner. Wash the filter with dish washing soap in hot water and shake it to remove excess water. Reinstall the filter in your air conditioner and close the front panel. Run the air conditioner to finish drying the filter.
-
10
Place the temperature control on a warmer setting if the outside temperature is less than 70 degrees or if it is nighttime. This will help prevent additional ice build-up.
