How to Remove Paint From a Brass Porthole
A porthole is the small, circular window located on the hull of a ship to admit light and air. Portholes are commonly made of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc. Removing paint from a brass porthole can be accomplished using a chemical solvent. The appropriate materials will also be required as not to mar the brass surface beneath the paint. Paint thinner, or paint stripper, will be the most effective and time-efficient method to dissolving the paint while preserving the porthole's original condition.

Soak a cleaning brush in a bucket of warm water. Scrub the porthole to determine whether the applied paint is latex-based; latex paint is water-soluble and can be dissolved with water alone if the paint is less than 3 weeks old.

Continue scrubbing the paint until it appears to thin. If it does not, fully cured latex or oil paint will need to be removed by use of a solvent.

Wipe any loose residue from the porthole using a damp cloth. The surface should be smooth in preparation for the paint thinner.

Cover your hands with solvent-resistant gloves to prevent alkaline burns. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply an even coat of the paint thinner. This step may require a rag, paint brush or spray can depending on the application.

Carefully scrape loose the dissolving paint with a putty knife once you have allowed the thinner to soften it for the instructed length of time. Scrub the remainder lightly with a scouring pad until the paint is completely lifted; be careful not to apply excessive pressure that might damage the underlying brass.

Rinse the loose paint from the porthole using a wet sponge or cloth. Dry the surface completely and polish the brass with an appropriate cleaning product if desired.
