How to Switch Gears With a Clutch on an ATV While Riding
ATVs may seem an easier-to-ride version of the motorcycle. After all, the ATV has four wheels on the ground at all times. However, whether you're riding on two wheels or four, you need to know how to shift a manual gearbox, complete with clutch, before riding anywhere on public roads. But fear not, new rider--with some practice, you'll be shifting through the gears like a pro.

1
Get on the ATV. Be sure you are seated comfortably and in a safe position. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, put the ATV in neutral and press the starter button to start the ATV.

2
Pull in the clutch lever, located on the left handlebar, and press the shifter down into first gear. Slowly release the clutch until you feel the point at which it actuates. Practice until you have a good feel for this spot in the lever pull.

3
Release the clutch slowly until you feel the ATV begin to "pull," and slowly roll on the throttle. Release the clutch lever completely to begin riding in first gear.
-
4
Pull in the clutch when you reach the top of the first gear range. Push the gear shifter up into the second gear position. Slowly release the clutch and apply throttle, just like taking off in first. You are now in second gear.

Continue shifting in this fashion as you ride. When you are ready to slow down or stop, pull in the clutch, brake with your right hand and right foot, and shift the gear lever down through the gears. Release the clutch lever slowly in each gear as you work your way down the gear range to a stop.

Tips & Warnings
Take it slow at first. ATVs are powerful machines and will get away from you if you are not conservative in your throttle application.
