1
Minimize the number of programs open at the same time. According to Logan Alright of PCAholic.com, most freeze-ups are caused by a lack of RAM. Every time you open a program, it starts to use certain amount of RAM memory. If you are a multi-tasker and need to use multiple programs simultaneously, add additional RAM. Every manufacturer has a specific type of RAM (see Resources). Once you know the type, you can always order it online or get it from the store.

2
Run "Disk Defragmenter" on a routine basis. This process cleans up your hard drive and rearranges your files. To defragment your hard drive in Windows XP, open My Computer and right-click on the "C:" drive. Select Properties, then click on the Tools tab and select "Defragment Now." The Windows Disk Defragmenter program will open. After making sure you've closed all running programs, click "Defragment." The process may take a long time depending on the size of your hard drive. Close the program once it is complete.

Clean up your registry at least once a month. There are several programs that can perform this function. PC Tools Registry Mechanic 9 for Windows is one of the easiest ones in the market. Install the program (see Resources) and perform a scan. This will check your registry and locate any items that can be removed safely.

4
Run antivirus/anti-spyware scans at least once-twice a week. Make sure you have a reliable anti-spyware and anti-virus program installed on your computer. There are several available free online. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0, Norton 360 Version 3.0, and McAfee Total Protection 2010 are some of the many. Most also feature automatic updates.

Do not try to clean up your registry manually unless you are absolutely confident. Doing so without prior knowledge can delete important system files.
