How to Find All the Visited Sites on a Computer

The Internet is an amazing resource with countless opportunities to learn about the world. But it also a portal to many things that children would be better off not seeing. If you are a parent or a school administrator you may want to keep an eye on exactly what your kids are viewing when they are on the Internet. Since some kids are very computer savvy there is no foolproof method to keep tabs on them, but there are some basic things that can be done as preventative measures.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to see if there is more than one browser installed on the computer. If so, check each one separately.

    • 2

Start the computer and open Internet Explorer. Click "View" in the top menu, then select "Explorer Bars" followed by "History" from the following drop-down menus. On the left a panel will open in which you can view all websites visited either by date or alphabetically. However, many kids know that they can delete this history. If there are no recent sites listed this means the history has been recently deleted. Close the panel.

    • 3

Select "Tools" in the menu and click on "Internet Options." In the dialog box that opens select the "General" tab and click "Settings."

    • 4

Click "View Files" in the dialog box that opens. A folder will now open containing a list of "cookie" files. If you hover over these files with your mouse they will display the URL of the websites visited. While these files can also be removed, it is less likely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that you have the legal and administrative rights to view a computer's web browser history. It may be that your locality has laws requiring the authorization of a judge to do this. If it is a school, you may need the permission of some higher authority.
